Understanding Spanish On The Internet And In Email
Little
little, meaning small, is often translated by adding the suffix -ito or -cito to the end of the noun; where the noun in question is feminine, the suffix agrees and becomes -ita or -cita. The suffix often expresses affection or approval. It is particularly common in Latin America; in Spain, the suffix -illo or -cillo is more common:
- a dog = un perro
- a little dog = un perrito
- a garden = un jardín
- a little garden = un jardincito
- my sister = mi hermana
- my little sister = mi hermanita
- a door = una puerta
- a little door = una puertecita
