Answering the phone 

•  Hello = ¡Sí! = ¡Aló! (AmS) = ¡Bueno! (Méx) = ¡Olá! (RPl) = ¡Diga! or ¡Dígame! (Esp)

The caller’s opening words

•  hello, is that Jackie? = ¿aló? ¿Jackie? (AmS) or (Esp) ¿eres Jackie?
•  hello, is that Mr Sánchez? = ¿es usted el señor Sánchez?
•  is Jackie there, please? = ¿está Jackie, por favor?
•  could I speak with (AmE) o (BrE) to Jackie, please? = ¿podría hablar con Jackie, por favor?
•  I wonder if I could speak with (AmE) o (BrE) to Mr Bolton, please = ¿podría hablar con el señor Bolton, por favor?
•  hello, this is Pete here = habla Pete or (Esp) soy Pete
•  hello, this is Donald Pearce speaking = buenos días/buenas tardes, habla Donald Pearce

Possible replies

•  (yes,) speaking = con él/ella (habla) (AmL) or (Esp) soy yo
•  just a minute, please = un momento or un momentito, por favor
•  hold on, please = (espere) un momento, por favor
•  hang on a minute = (espera) un momentito
•  hold the line, please o please hold = no cuelgue, por favor
•  who am I speaking to, please? = ¿con quién hablo, por favor?
•  who’s calling o speaking, please? = ¿de parte de quién?
•  who shall I say is calling? = ¿de parte de quién?
•  I’m afraid she isn’t here at the moment = lo siento, (en este momento) no está
•  can I take a message? o would you like to leave a message? = ¿quiere(s) dejar un mensaje?

The caller’s response 

•  It’s OK. I’ll call back o try again later = no gracias, volveré a llamar más tarde
•  could you tell her that o say that Paul called? = ¿podría decirle que llamó Paul?
•  Could you ask her to call me back? She has my number = ¿Podría decirle que me llame? Ella sabe mi teléfono

Telephone numbers

The digits of telephone numbers in Spanish are often combined into larger numbers: 

•  55–47–82 = cincuenta y cinco – cuarenta y siete – ochenta y dos
•  308–12–23 = trescientos ocho – doce – veintitrés or tres – cero-ocho – doce – veintitrés
•  541 37 02 = cinco – cuarenta y uno – treinta y siete – cero – dos or cinco – cuatro – uno – treinta y siete – cero – dos or quinientos cuarenta y uno – treinta y siete – cero – dos
